PARTNERSHIPS Nick Pinchuk, chairman and CEO of Snap-on Inc., was named SkillsUSA’s Champion of the Year at a fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C. The event raised funds for SkillsUSA programs, inspired new sponsors to offer their support and provided much positive media attention for SkillsUSA. The “Skills Build America” campaign was established, the first individual giving campaign in the organization’s history. The campaign introduces a new source of revenue to the organization and meets an expressed need from our members to give back. ADVOCACY The annual Washington Leadership Training Institute was the biggest ever, with 314 students and advisors from 27 states attending. State delegations conducted personal, student-led visits to 84 congressional offices. The training students receive at WLTI teaches them how to become effective advocates, and their personal visits to Capitol Hill make a strong impact when it comes to funding for career and technical education. That message is reinforced when representatives from industry take the time to make similar visits. Members of the Youth Development Foundation Committee once again met with individual congressional offices and with the staff of the House Manufacturing Caucus and the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions committee. VISIBILITY SkillsUSA received national coverage from FoxBusiness.com, Huffington Post, Parade Magazine online, and multiple trade and business journals. Our 2011 Champion of the Year — John McGlade of Air Products — was featured on the CBS Evening News in a story about CTE. Greater publicity for the organization brings greater attention to the SkillsUSA mission and the quality of SkillsUSA students. It also raises public awareness of the growing skills gap and the need for skilled workers. More than 100 stories about the national conference appeared in the greater Kansas City region, up from 85 in 2011. Stories on SkillsUSA state conferences rose 30 percent. SkillsUSA secured a Google grant providing free ads for SkillsUSA on Google. The value of the grant is estimated at $120,000 per year. The average number of monthly hits on our website was 3.1 million. “Likes” on our Facebook page rose to nearly 10,000. Mobile applications were created for members to keep track of the latest SkillsUSA news and events. SkillsUSA’s growing presence on the Web, including Facebook and other social media outlets, ensures that our members can interact with the organization through the latest and most innovative tools available. It also builds a stronger sense of community for members and offers new ways to promote all aspects of SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA Annual Report 2012 • 11 http://www.FoxBusiness.com
