ORGANIZATION I Lakeshore Plaza, a six-story Class A I The International Facility office building in the award-winning master-planned community of Dos Lagos, has received LEED green building certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, representatives announced. The upscale office project from Timberline Commercial Real Estate of Irvine (California), built near the lakes at Dos Lagos and visible from Interstate 15, is the first Commercial Office LEED project in Riverside and San Bernardino counties to be certified under Core and Shell, according to the USGBC Inland Empire Chapter. I The Electric Power Research Management Association is pleased to announce it has joined the High-Performance Commercial Green Building Partnership, a consortium of leading organizations from the building community that seeks to provide guidance and technical expertise on sustainability issues to the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Program. I The Houston office of Hines, the in- ternational real estate firm, announced the unveiling of a green office program designed to enhance the sustainable features and operation of the space the firm occupies—more than 230 offices on four continents. I The Georgia World Congress I Alpha Technologies is proud to announce new additions to the executive management group: Jim Heidenreich as VP of Product Management and Customer Fulfillment and John O’Rourke as VP of Finance and Administration. I At the 40th conference and expo of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) held in Reno, NV, February 9-13, 2009, announced new officers and board members. Michael Chase, CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI, was named Board President. He is a Technical Consultant with MC Environmental Solutions in Bakersfield, CA. Julie Etra, CPESC, is now International Development Vice President. Ron Faucher, CPESC, is Past President. Becky Gauthier will serve as Administrative Vice President. Brock Peters, CISEC, is now Technical Vice President. Tom Williams, MA, CPESC, is now Marketing VP. The IECA presented its Awards of Environmental Excellence recently. Sam Lamont, CPESC, CESSWI, CISEC and Alex Zimmerman, CPESC, were recognized with the Educational Achievement Award. 26 March 2009 Sustainable Land Development Today Institute (EPRI) announced that five electric utilities in the United States and Canada have joined EPRI to host studies of the impacts of retrofitting advanced amine-based post-combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology to existing coal-fired power plants. The five host companies and sites include Edison Mission Group’s 1,536megawatt (MW) Powerton Station, operated by Midwest Generation, in Pekin, Ill.; Great River Energy’s 1,100-MW Coal Creek Station in Underwood North Dakota; Nova Scotia Power’s two 160-MW units at its Lingan Generating Station in Lingan, Nova Scotia; Intermountain Power Agency’s 950-MW Intermountain Generation Station in Delta, Utah, and the 176-MW circulating fluidized bed boiler Unit 1 at FirstEnergy‘s Bay Shore Plant in Oregon, Ohio. I The Western Legacy Alliance Center Authority recently announced that it has joined forces with its downtown Atlanta neighbors to form a Zero Waste Zone. This will be the first zone of its kind in the southeast and one of the first in the nation. Members include local restaurants, attractions and hotels, that have pledged to recycle, reuse spent grease for the local production of biofuel and to compost or donate food residuals in order to drastically decrease the amount of waste going to landfills. I The Portland Cement Association (WLA), a newly formed coalition, announced its kickoff to bring together like-minded organizations from various backgrounds to advocate for responsible and sustainable access to public lands. A member-funded and member-driven organization, the WLA aims to bring all parties to the table to identify challenges and solutions, eliminating reactionary and piecemeal solutions to issues that threaten the working landscapes and lifestyles of the West. announced the communities that have been the 2008 Sustainable Leadership Award: Fort Worth, Texas; Glendale, Ariz.; Chicago, Ill.; Leawood, Kan.; Hancock, N.H.; Salem, Ore.; Dallas, Texas; and Lubbock, Texas, were recognized for using new innovations and technologies that resulted in immense environmental benefits and cost savings. I Intermat officials recently announced that Carlson Software‘s Natural Regrade land reclamation software won a Silver Award in the Services Category of their Innovation Awards. The official awards ceremony will be at the 2009 Intermat, one of the world’s largest trade shows for the construction industry. This year’s event will be held April 20 to 25 at the Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre in Paris, France.
