A maritime exhibit of historic wooden boats that once plied the waters of the
Chesapeake Bay is housed in a separate building. Accessible by water, call for

ST. CLEMENT'S ISLAND MUSEUM

Exhibits trace the history of the English colonization of Maryland and the landing on nearby St. Clement's Island on March 25, 1634. On the museum grounds
is a 19th century one-room schoolhouse, pier and docking facilities. Water taxi
service to St. Clement's Island State Park is available on most weekends from June
through September weather permitting. Call ahead for water taxi hours and water
conditions specific to the day you would like to visit.

The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum (PRNAM) presents the remarkable history of more than 70 years of aviation research and flight test activities at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. See more than twenty outdoor display aircraft that
flew in flight tests at NAS Pax River-this is the world's only museum to display
both the X-32 and X-35 Joint Strike Fighter competitors. Examine a world-class
replica of the US Navy's first aircraft, the Curtiss A-1 biplane amphibian. Learn
the amazing history of Naval Aviation in galleries featuring Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles (UAVs), jet and propeller engines, aviator flight gear, ejection seats, and
flight test instrumentation. Sit in actual jet fighter cockpits and "fly" exciting missions in PRNAM's Mach Combat flight simulators. Find aviation-themed gifts
and souvenirs in the expanded Flightline Gift Shop. Be part of guided tours and
children's educational activities. Open Tues. - Sat., 10 AM - 5 PM and Sunday,
12 PM - 5 PM.
PINEY POINT LIGHTHOUSE, MUSEUM AND

Climb the oldest lighthouse on the Potomac River, constructed in 1836. The
site was once a summer resort for Washington dignitaries including several U.S.
presidents. Six-acre park with picnic area, kayak launch, a boardwalk, pier and
sandy beach. The museum details that site's history and also includes artifacts
from the WWII U-1105 Black Panther German submarine, which lies just off-

Built in 1858 and in use until 1942, the granite block and brick structure retains
its original upstairs cells; one now holds a re-creation of the office of Dr. Bean,
an old-fashioned, small-town doctor. The jail keeper's quarters downstairs house
artifacts that relate county history. A cannon from The Ark, one of two ships
that first brought colonists to Maryland, and later used to defend St. Mary's
City, is displayed on the grounds. The museum also serves as a county visitor
information center. Call ahead for hours before visiting or to schedule a visit
outside normal operating hours.
