Explore forty acres of outdoor living history exhibits on the site of Maryland's first
capital. Step onboard the tall ship, the Maryland Dove, and try a colonial game
at Smith's Ordinary. Come face-to-face with heirloom livestock and find out how
Maryland's native population interacted with the English colonists. Allow your
spirit to soar as you tour the recreated Brick Chapel, a symbol of the religious
freedom established here for the first time in the English-speaking world. Discover
how archaeologists and historians found St. Mary's City after it disappeared over
two centuries ago. Get up close to excavations and artifacts at the St. John's Site
Museum. During the summer, see archaeologists at work uncovering the past.

SOTTERLEY PLANTATION

Overlooking the scenic Patuxent River, the plantation encompasses nearly 100
acres of open fields, gardens, and shoreline. Sotterley Plantation is the sole surviving Tidewater plantation in Maryland that is fully interpreted and open to the
public. Construction of the now rare "earth-fast" main dwelling began in the early
1700s. Highlights include shell alcoves in the drawing room and the hall staircase.
Outbuildings illustrate the site's 300 plus year evolution and include a Customs
Warehouse, Smoke House, and an original Slave Cabin dating to the 1830s.
Museum shop, nature trails. Accessible by water, call for information. Grounds
open year round. Guided Tour Season: May 1 - Oct. 31, Tues. - Sat., 10 AM - 4
PM, and Sun., Noon - 4 PM. Museum shop is open during tour season.

SUMMERSEAT FARM

With a history dating back to the late 17th century, Summerseat is a 120-acre
working farm with a Queen Anne-style house, outbuildings including meat and
dairy houses, barns and gardens. Summerseat breeds the only publicly accessible
herd of American Buffalo in the region. The farm has other animals, a vineyard
and trails including a bluebird trail. Tables and a gazebo are available for picnickers. Check the website for special programs, events, and facilities rental information. Open to the public for self-guided tours of the property and guided tours of
the house the first Saturday of the month, May - Oct., 10 AM - 2 PM.

TUDOR HALL

Originally built in 1744 and enlarged in the 1760s, this Georgian-style house
was the home of Phillip Key, uncle of Francis Scott Key, author of the Star
Spangled Banner. Unusual features of the house are the inset portico, the main
hall's hanging staircase, and a "triple fireplace" in the kitchen. Maryland War of
1812 site. Tudor Hall serves as the headquarters and the research library of the
St. Mary's County Historical Society. Bookstore, research center, and tours available. Call ahead for hours before visiting or to schedule a visit outside normal
operating hours.
