CIVIL WAR SITES
The Potomac River separates St. Mary's County residents from
neighbors in Virginia. Physically part of the Union, but with cultural
ties to the South, our Civil War history is rich but little known.

FORT LINCOLN AND THE CIVIL WAR MUSEUM
AT POINT LOOKOUT STATE PARK

Point Lookout served as a Union hospital and then, after the Battle of
Gettysburg, as a prison camp which held as many as 52,264 Confederate
soldiers. The park has a museum and a reconstructed fort detailing its Civil
War history. Open May - October, Saturdays and Sundays: 9 AM - 5 PM.
Additional hours may vary; call for details. (See Parks listing.)

Lookout prison camp. The federal monument marks the interment site of
prisoners who died at Point Lookout Prison Camp. The monuments are located
just before the entrance to the park.
