SMCU Money Masters - Winter 2008 - (Page 2) welcome IN THIS ISSUE 3 4 Tech Tips Community Connection What’s Next? Motley Fool: A Tale of Two Borrowers FROM THE PRESIDENT The start of a new year is always an exciting time — a time to look back on past trends and anticipate new ones. As we explore what’s in and what’s not, this issue of Money Matters addresses when predictions and forecasting should be used to make major financial and essential life decisions. Early in 2007, it was predicted that the housing market would experience continued price drops and sluggish sales. As foreseen, subprime mortgages escalated in popularity in the past year. Besides coming true, this particular prediction also led to an abundance of home foreclosures. Fortunately, SMCU did not follow this negative trend, since our philosophy of people helping people prevented us from extending mortgages to those who could not easily afford them. In addition, we provide free seminars and BALANCE, a complimentary counseling service to help strengthen financial fitness. This focus on member-owners means that we keep an eye on the big picture instead of following fads. Financing a mortgage, home equity loan, or home equity line of credit from SMCU is — and will continue to be — an outstanding and secure value. Another trend is for today’s business professionals to put in a 70-plus hour workweek. Although most claim to enjoy what they do, many admit to living in fear of an early burnout. This month’s issue provides tips on how to survive such an intense workload in an informative article by Jean Chatzky. Early studies also reveal that green will be the color of choice as more Americans embrace environmental stewardship. In 2008, consumers will place greater emphasis on doing business with companies that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint. As a natural offshoot of being green, consumers will also demand optimum safety and purity in the products they buy. As individuals take a firmer stance and demand the best of the best, SMCU will be here to provide the financial services that reflect the desire for enrichment and enhancement. 6 8 11 Jean Chatzky: Extreme Jobs 13 Member Tips 14 Money Management LOCATIONS On Broadway Branch 830 Jefferson Ave. Redwood City, CA 94063 Mon.-Thur., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fri., 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat., 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Redwood City Branch 525 Middlefield Road Redwood City, CA 94063 Mon.-Thur., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fri., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. San Mateo Branch (New Saturday hours!) 1515 S.
