The New World is full of buzz words like “social media” where content is transmitted and received through blogs, podcasts, RSS feeds so that information is readily available at our fingertips anytime. Words like “google” and “wiki” have crept into the English language and are freely used in place of a verb or a noun. When looking for information on a topic, one can simply “google it”, or enter a “wikipedia” to find that knowledge. The new social media in forms of websites such as Facebook and YouTube enable speedy mass distribution of information at no cost. Organizations like SMEI must embrace and adopt current technology to serve our membership as effectively as possible. Webinars have been used successfully in our programs to share and disseminate information across our network with no geographical boundaries. The international board has a “wikispace” where we can access board information and resources. The future smei.org website will have RSS capability and SMEI will continue to participate in the blogosphere. In our technology savvy world, these means of communicating to our members will continue to be important as we expand internationally. Given the many different time zones and our geographic diversity, it is imperative that our organization uses technology to enhance our communication worldwide. However, despite the technological advances, we must never forget the importance of face-to-face interaction. The annual international conference has always been a key event for SMEI. While it serves many purposes, such as providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, peer-to-peer learning, education from thought-leaders, the most impact this event has is to allow members to connect at a personal level and have fun. For the coming year, I hope you, as members will participate in the events planned by the international board, and in programs offered by your local affiliate. The strength of SMEI relies on the participation of our membership. While our organization continues to embrace technology and the new social media, we must remember the importance of good old fashioned face-to-face interaction. We are after all, human.
