Earlier knowledge on best
practices, rather than waiting
for peer-reviewed publications

*

Access to shared materials,
tools, and templates that
would otherwise be created or
purchased independently

programs could consider taking
advantage of technology that is
already available and increasingly
owned by patients. However,
programs should also ensure
patients are well-educated on the
limitations of popular technology. 

using health-related apps and
positive outcomes during cardiac
rehabilitation. Yudi et al., (2016)
summarized the findings of four
researchers who completed studies
that incorporated smartphone
technology in the course of
cardiac rehabilitation. One of the
researchers, Blasco et al., utilized
a web-based telemonitoring
system that gave patients selfmeasurement devices. These
devices were connected to a
cardiologist, who was able to
retrieve the data and send his
patients recommendations via a
short message service. Patients
who were a part of this trial had
at least one risk factor improve.
This type of outcome provides
hope for continued advancement
with smartphone technology in the
setting of cardiac rehabilitation.

I highlight this HVHC as a very
successful blueprint or prototype
for discovery and dissemination of
VBC models of care. The AACVPR
VBC workgroup will attempt to
initially outreach and engage
Affiliate leaders and members to
possibly design and map a similar
prototype of a high value healthcare network among the affiliate
memberships and other members
at large to reach the level of some
of benefits that HVHC has been
able to provide to its members. This
blueprint will not be achieved in the
immediate future, but let's start to
have the crucial conversations and
embrace a state of mind to design,
implement, and evaluate VBC to all
our cardiopulmonary patients. 

As technology continues to
advance drastically in the upcoming
years, more rehabilitation facilities
will be implementing the use of
apps on smartphones and tablets
with their patients. Costs and
obtaining funds for these apps
will have to be considered as
technology trends become more
prevalent in rehabilitation services.
Additional research should be
considered to assess if barriers
such as age and cognition affects
a person's ability to effectively use
smartphone technology throughout
cardiac rehab. Overall, the future
remains optimistic for technological
advancements within the health
care field, and will appear to have
monumental impact on health
outcomes of cardiac patients. 
