LMA Is on Fire!

s you read this issue, hopefully you are coming back from
the 2013 LMA Annual Conference energized and full of
great new ideas to implement in your professional life.
Probably, you are also a little exhausted from many hours of great
content, networking and fun! LMA’s yearly conference is a terrific
reminder of the amazing, positive, dynamic community we are.
I love being able to interact with everyone and hear your “war
stories.”
This year, we had a great group of firms and chapters who submitted their success stories for the YHA and Chapter of the Year
Awards, which you can read about in the May/June issue of Strategies. Nearly every LMA chapter participated with a submission
in this year’s awards. Consider this: all of our 19 chapters had a
great year in 2013 and most chose to submit their success in our
awards program! Congratulations to the Vancouver Chapter for
your amazing year and successful submission!
At the conference, we also recognized our many YHA winners
(see tinyurl.com/d56feek for a full listing), Rising Star Catherine
Tsang of our Vancouver chapter and inducted Kim Perret of
our Southeastern chapter into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations to all!
Reading and hearing about all of the exciting things that are
happening for our members and chapters, I suppose it is no
surprise that LMA is poised for great success as well. As Aleisha
Gravit so poignantly pointed out in her opening remarks at the
annual conference: “LMA is on FIRE!” (No disrespect to Alicia
Keys, but I personally liked Aleisha Gravit’s rendition better.)
Aleisha is right, LMA really is “on fire” in 2013!
We’ve had an exciting start to the year, and there are a lot of
great things in the works for the coming months. First, as I am
sure you have heard by now, we are very fortunate to have been
able to welcome a large group of new members by forming the
Client Value SIG. This group was led to LMA by Toby Brown,
director of pricing and strategic analytics at Akin Gump. Thanks
to Aleisha Gravit and her great work with Toby to help these
pricing, project management and process improvement professionals join our ranks. The addition of nearly 150 new members
is sure to add many embers to the fire for our international and
chapter conversations and programs.
2014 LMA Annual Conference in beautiful Orlando, Fla., at the
Hilton Bonnet Creek. Look out Florida, we are coming back!
We are also on the cusp of releasing a newly redesigned Strategies magazine format that will better represent the vibrancy and
vitality of our membership. The new design will be much more
consumer-oriented, with bold graphics, more photography and,
in keeping with today’s growing trend, we will even be introducing the regular use of infographics. Our May/June issue will
be the premiere issue for the new design, so watch your mailbox
soon for the new and improved Strategies.
With membership blazing, we ended 2012 with more than
3,200 members. LMA is embarking on research to help segment
our membership and identify ways we can better deliver educational content to those segments. To accomplish this, there
are two simultaneous research projects in progress. The first is a
member segmentation project to better understand the primary
and secondary segments within our current membership.
The second is an education evaluation and development project
designed to understand the key networking and educational
needs of those segments and develop a framework for presenting and organizing LMA educational content that delivers
relevance, profitability and growth. Both of these projects are
in support of our Strategic Initiative No. 3, to “be the leading
provider of legal marketing learning and networking opportunities.” The results will be an even stronger messaging platform
and an educational and networking development plan that will
help us achieve this goal.
I encourage you to participate fully in LMA International and
your local chapter to help “fan the flames” and keep the LMA
fire burning well into 2013 and beyond.

Our 2013 LMA Annual Conference really was on fire with great
educational content and fun networking. The 2013 exhibit hall
was sold out and the event attracted more than 25 percent more
people than in 2012. We also announced the location of the
