See Xu Bing’s Monkeys Grasping for the Moon, a suspended sculpture spanning all four levels of the Sackler Gallery. EXHIBITIONS “A Shogun’s Wedding: Princess Atsuhime’s Palanquin” (March 21- April 9) The Japanese ceremonial palanquin created in 1856 for the wedding procession of Atsuhime when she married Tokugawa Iesada. A porcelain bowl by Japanese contemporary artist Shindo Susumu is on view by the Sackler’s Level 3 reflecting pool. “The Tale of Shuten Doji” Works of art illustrating a popular Japanese tale of the conquest of the monster Shuten Doji. “The Tsars and the East: Gifts From Turkey and Iran in the Moscow Kremlin” (opens May 9) Rarely seen arms and armor, bejeweled vessels and regalia offered as lavish gifts and tributes by the Ottomans and Safavids to the Russian tsars. goSmithsonian.com 48 ARTHUR M.
