goSmithsonian - June 2008 - (Page 4) THE GARDENS Take a moment to relax in the lush gardens surrounding the Smithsonian museums. The Butterfly Habitat Garden at the Natural History Museum and the Victory and Heirloom Gardens at American History compliment the museum experience. Other eye-catching gardens include the Enid A. Haupt Garden and the Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden at the Castle, and the Mary Livingston Ripley Garden adjacent to the Hirshhorn Museum. Tours are available, weather permitting; check at the Smithsonian information desks. VISITOR INFORMATION HOURS All the museums and the National Zoo are free and open daily, seven days a week, closing only on December 25. Hours at most museums are 10 to 5:30. The Reynolds Center, located at 8th and F streets NW, is open from 11:30 to 7. Check for extended summer evening hours at the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Freer and Sackler Galleries and the African Art Museum. The American History Museum reopens this fall. The Arts and Industries building is closed. PLEASE NOTE Smithsonian security officers hand-check all bags, purses, briefcases and containers at the entrance to each museum. Smoking is not permitted. Service animals are welcome, but all pets are prohibited. Strollers may be used in all museums. Handheld and video cameras are permitted for non-commercial use, but prohibited in special exhibitions and as posted. Flash cameras may not be used at the African Art Museum or the Hirshhorn Museum. Tripods are not permitted; however members of the media may obtain permission to use tripods from the museum’s Public Affairs Office. ACCESSIBILITY For visitors with disabilities, information about parking, building access and other services is available at any museum information desk, or call 202-633-1000 or 202-633-5285 (TTY).
