SoCo Magazine - May 2008 - (Page 100) BeSeen photos by rui frias dowNtowN New Bedford, iNc. 17th aNNual Gala receptioN Michael Barry By rebecca aubut photography by Bodil perkins peter dewalt, lena Moniz New Bedford SyMphoNy orcheStra SpoNSorS’ receptioN on March 13th, the New Bedford Symphony orchestra held its Sponsors’ reception. the party was at cork at the New Bedford Seaport. the NBSo offers quality music to the Southcoast area and also provides programs that educate and raise awareness of classical music to elementary schools. 100 | s ocomagazi ne . i nfo | M ay 2 0 0 8 last month downtown New Bedford, inc., held its 17th annual Gala downtown reception. held after hours at webster Bank on pleasant Street, music from the Showstoppers Musical entertainment group trickled down from the balcony as over 200 guests mingled around local artists’ work while dining on food catered by isaiah’s restaurant. “a few years ago we recognized that this annual downtown gala would provide us with an opportunity to highlight some of the individuals, businesses, and organizations with awards that underscore their contributions to downtown and the city as a whole,” said Kevin pelland, chairman of the board of downtown New Bedford, inc. “the recipients of these awards continue to be major contributors and key players to the downtown area, those who are so committed to this extraordinary place we call downtown.” The Business of the Year Award is given to a business that has had a significant and positive impact on the area through real estate investment, jobs, or some other economic, social, or cultural investment.this year’s recipient was pier fish company. accepting on behalf of his family’s business was president Michael Barry. the presidents recognition award is presented to an individual who stands out as having made a major commitment of time, talent, and resources for the betterment of downtown. this year the award was given to peter dewalt, president of reynolds dewalt printing. due to the increased prominence of the culture and arts in the downtown area, downtown New Bedford, inc., initiated the cultural arts recognition award last year. this year’s award was handed to lena Moniz, executive director of the New Bedford Symphony orchestra, in recognition of the organization’s new educational programs in area schools.
