SoCo Magazine - May 2008 - (Page 15) LeAdIng by exAmpLe? Just weeks after coast magazine , sister to SOCO ™ magazine and owned byThe SouthCoast Publishing Group, LLC (no relationship to the local newspaper or its parent company), ran a feature on the New Bedford-based company Vectrix—(manufacturers of environmentally friendly motor scooters), the junior senator of Massachusetts, John Kerry, followed our lead and paid a visit to the plant. However, the difference between his visit and ours was that we brought helmets, and obviously he didn’t. Kids: Always wear your helmet when riding any vehicle, whether on public or private property. fyi SoCo ™ APRIL 2008 STUCK FOR FINDING A GIFT? On one side of the argument, our editorial board concluded that the criminalizing of cannabis has always been a ridiculous means of controlling its use, or abuse—depending on one’s daily intake. On the other hand, making the use of this drug no worse than not using one’s directional when changing lanes would probably escalate its use by kids who will inevitably find it more easily available than alcohol. We can see it now: The day when pot is decriminalized will surely be the day when every college and high school student stages a smoke-in. Barney, when do you propose the party will start? SOCO™ magazine has long been associated with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Through sponsorships, reviews, and photo essays, we have always shown our commitment to this wonderful organization of the SouthCoast, as we have with so many other dedicated companies and individuals. Recently it was brought to our attention that an advertisement for a concert that we and other companies were sponsoring showed up in the local real-estate magazine, Home Gallery, less the four sponsoring business entities. After contacting Lena Moniz, executive director of the NBSO, to find out if this ad was sent without the sponsorship listing, we learned—much to our surprise and dismay—that the ad was purposefully altered. According to Moniz, “All of our ads are designed and distributed to publications with all sponsors listed. Any changes would have to have been made by the publication without our permission or knowledge.” Since Home Gallery decided to omit the sponsorships so graciously donated, (without permission), we believe that it’s only right to acknowledge those companies that have made a commitment to the NBSO and its tireless effort to bring music to the SouthCoast community and classrooms. The following companies were, in part, responsible for bringing you The Romance of Spring, the March 29th NBSO spring concert. Sponsors for the concert included: The Home-The Cottages at Bay View & Adams House, Seamark Financial Services, Inc., Medicaid & Estate Planning, and SOCO™ magazine. Just as our April issue was going to print, we discovered that trouble was on the horizon. It appears that Joe Ligotti, The (Real) Guy From Boston (SOCO™, April 2008), became embroiled in a battle with a former associate. Not knowing all of the details, we did find out that one of the casualties, as a result of the fallout between the two gentlemen, was that the website formerly used by Ligotti is now being used to promote an imposter—and a rather poor facsimile. For all of you trying to find the guy who has the balls to say what you’re thinking, go to theguyfromboston.net—this is where you can find him and his rants. Also, for anyone who may have missed the article in April, hit the “In Media” tab on the site and then click on SOCO™: the entire feature is available for your reading pleasure. Good luck, Joe, we wish you well. An Imposter? tIdbIts Me & Ed’s Restaurant in New Bedford put a new drink on their menu called the SOCO™ Cosmo. They served it at the March AfterHours Party. It was so delicious that we hope they continue it. Last month we ran an article entitled “Masters of Motion.” The photographers did not receive proper credit. The correct names are Thomas Nola-Rion and Gene Schiavone. M ay 2 0 0 8 | s o co m a g azi ne . i nfo | 15 http://socomagazine.info
