Then there are the golfers who see a mild winter day as a chance to hit a few drives. Whichever type of golfer you are, the SouthCoast offers some impressive opportunities. Spring is the time to check your equipment for needed replacement and repairs. Clubs may need to be re-gripped, and your soft spikes may be worn. Before you book a tee time, check your bag and stock it with new golf balls, tees, sunscreen, insect repellent, and ball markers. Whatever you like to have with you on the course, make sure it’s packed, so you spend more time playing than preparing. Your physical preparation before a round of golf should involve brisk walking and stretching of the trunk muscles and upper body. Swinging a weighted club, available at most sporting-goods stores, will not only improve your flexibility, but will also strengthen the muscles necessary for a good swing. Since your stance is important in golf, strong core muscles will always help your game. “I like to putt inside over the winter just to keep my skills up,” says Laurie Mandly of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. “I play a lot of charity events, which are a scramble format, and my short game needs to be dependable. I’m not a serious golfer, but I like to hold my own when I play in a foursome.” John Coucci III of Mattapoisett is just 16, but he’s already a serious golfer.
