I plan on playing in college, probably somewhere in Florida,” Coucci says confidently. When it comes to finding a golf course to suit your needs on the SouthCoast, the choices are plentiful. In addition to private clubs, there are many quality public courses offering a variety of tee times and leagues. R o g e r T o u g a s , 81, a l o n g t i m e SouthCoast resident and former state representative, has enjoyed playing golf for more than 50 years. “I play in the HOT league—which stands for the Hawthorne Old Timers— at Hawthorne Country Club in North Dartmouth. We play nine holes, take a break and eat, then have the option of heading out for another nine holes.” Tougas recommends Hawthorne as a very manageable course for seniors. He plays three to four times a week there. Other popular courses include the Whaling City Golf Course (a.k.a. The Whale), Acushnet River Valley Golf Course in Acushnet, Poquoy Brook in Lakeville, Brookside Golf Club in Bourne, Paul Harney Golf Course in Barnstable, Falmouth Country Club in Falmouth, Old Barnstable Golf Course in Marstons Mills, and the Hyannis Golf Club. Tee times are generally available from early morning through dusk, and the more popular times fill up quickly. All of the above public courses offer golf instruction, golf-cart rental, pro shops, driving ranges, and putting greens. With the prevailing southwest winds on the SouthCoast, playing golf is generally quite comfortable and always scenic. Many of our area towns offer youth instructional programs. Golf can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities, and clubs can be rented while you’re learning the sport. If you live on the SouthCoast, see what golf has to offer you, and you just might be in for a very pleasant surprise.
