Botany 2008 Conference Program

President’s Symposium Understanding the Crisis in Science Literacy: The BSA is Planting Science in the 21st Century The general public understands what science does, but not how it is done. Society needs science, and scientists need an informed, thoughtful, and open-minded citizenry. This symposium is designed to help botanists take an active role in building a scientifically literate public. Presenters have expertise in communication and education, and all have made contributions to solving the current crisis in scientific literacy. Presenters include: TUESDAY, JULY 29 1:30 - 5:30 PM ROOM 182 I K BARBER Matthew Nisbet studies strategic communication in scientific and environmental controversies at the American University in Washington, DC, and is examining the interactions among experts, journalists, and the public. He has analyzed a wide range of science-related debates including those over stem cell research, global warming, intelligent design-creationism, plant biotechnology, nanotechnology, and hurricanes. Dietram Scheufele teaches at the University of Wisconsin and has published extensively in the areas of public opinion and political communication. His research focuses on framing effects, public participation, and new information technologies. He has served on committees and advisory boards for numerous organizations including the National Academy of Engineering and the International Communication Association. Judy Scotchmoor spent 25 years teaching math and science to 7th and 8th graders, and is now Assistant Director of the University of California Museum of Paleontology, in charge of Education and Public Outreach. She is currently the Project Coordinator of four NSF-funded programs – Understanding Evolution, Understanding Science, the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science, and the Paleontological Portal. Gordon Uno chairs the Department of Botany and Microbiology at the University of Oklahoma and is well known for his contributions to botanical education. He has written textbooks and a handbook for finishing Ph.D.s and new faculty members to assist them in developing a contemporary undergraduate course in biology. He has served as a program officer in the Division of Undergraduate Education at NSF and as President of the National Association of Biological Teachers. Marshall Sundberg of Emporia State University is a founding member of the Planting Science Steering Committee of the BSA. He is interested in science education and has published on curriculum design and assessment. He was awarded the Charles H. Bessey Award by the BSA for outstanding contributions to the field of botanical education and was named “Four Year College Teacher of the Year” by the National Association of Biology Teachers. 15 14
