Botany 2008 Conference Program - (Page 33) Supporting Student Involvement in the Botanical Sciences Winners of the 1st Annual BSA Student T-Shirt Contest Rachel Meyer & Natalia Pabon-Mora Botanical Society of America leading scientists and educators since 1893 Plant biology has been through dramatic transformations over the last decades with the integration of phylogenetic systematics and genomics, two fields that had allowed a be�er understanding of character evolution in all plant groups and had reassessed the relationships among main plant groups currently recognized. The design aims to show the circumscription of land plants as understood nowadays showing widely recognized clades (and in some cases grades) by including representatives of groups such as algae and allies, ferns, gymnosperms, basal angiosperms, monocots, basal core eudicots and core eudicots. The design also aims to join genomic and systematic crowds by reflecting how both approaches have become complementary and necessary for generating homology assessments and readdressing the evolution of plant forms. Additionally, we admired the really old school botanical conference tee shirts. Those designs had a distinct style, and they were always hand drawn. This format we feel is symbolic of how research in plant biology is a continuous formation of ideas, sketching out the experimental design, and testing hypotheses.
