Administered by WHY (World Hunger Year), the HCMAs honor print and electronic media for outstanding coverage of hunger and economic poverty and the underlying root causes of these problems. This includes work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic empowerment, sustainable development, food production, agriculture, nutrition, and the struggle for land. The awards are cash prizes of $2,500. The awards cover six media categories: newspaper; magazines; television/film; radio; photojournalism; and books. All entries for the 2008 HCMAs must have appeared in the media between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008. International entries must be printed or broadcast in English. The Fellowships are designed to increase accurate reporting on mental health issues and decrease incorrect, stereotypical information. Each journalist awarded will receive a $10,000 stipend. Applicants must have at least three years of professional experience in print or electronic journalism, submit an application packet (packet found online), and attend orientation and presentation meetings in September at the beginning and end of the Fellowship year. Fellows will not be required to leave their current employment. Awards will be announced July 10, 2009. Journalists of color are encouraged to apply. Deadline: April 20, 2009.
