Journalists interested in covering such topics in the future may also apply. Applicants may be staff or freelance journalists. While at MIT, fellows will audit courses, attend twice-weekly seminars with leading researchers and participate in two week-long boot camps on topics such as Medical Evidence and Genes and Cells. Fellows receive a $60,000 stipend. Deadline: March 2, 2009 second place. The third-place winner was Hanna Ricketson, a senior at Arizona State. The contest is open to undergraduates (including seniors) who write bylined general interest, editorial page or Op-Ed page columns. Sports columns, movie reviews, magazine columnists and other specialized columns are not eligible. Judges for the contest are professional newspaper columnists. There is no entry fee. One entry for each student newspaper columnist is permitted. An entry consists of three published columns from the period between March 1, 2008 and Feb. 29, 2009. The NSNC Education Foundation is associated with the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, America’s largest association of newspaper columnists, founded in 1977. Columnists or retired columnists are eligible to join the NSNC. In addition, anyone who is interested in becoming a columnist or is interested in the craft of column writing is eligible to join as an associate member.
