Sarah Palin and Sen. Ted Stevens to hear from well-traveled journalist Robert Meyerowitz. The chapter co-sponsored a free public lecture with Meyerowitz titled “Can You See the Real Me? Covering Politics From Panama to Palin.” As an accomplished freelancer, editor and, most recently, visiting journalism professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Meyerowitz has amassed a career that includes stints in Hawaii, New York, Jerusalem and Central America. Aside from work as an editor at the Anchorage Daily News, his previous work includes reporting with The Associated Press and National Public Radio, where he covered civil unrest in Central America and efforts to depose Manuel Noriega. t Chris M. The workshops were part of the chapter’s third annual Fall Continuing Education Series, held at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, one of two major print dailies in Seattle. Topics included digital photography for the Web; business reporting and speaking the language of executives; shooting and editing video for the Web; using social media (such as Facebook and Twitter) as a reporting tool; and how to blog effectively and generate site traffic. Topics of the two-act musical included newsmakers of the past year, notably the assent and fall of former Gov. Mike Huckabee in the Republican primary, as well as the local mayoral race. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton even weaved their way into the performance. The proceeds benefited both the SPJ chapter, whose members were featured as performers, and the local chapter of the American Association of University Women. Panelists included editors from Newsday and the Long Island Business News as well as the news director of the local TV station, News 12. The spirited discussion focused on the recent acquisition of Newsday by Cablevision, and why the newspaper might, in the future, work closely with News 12, which is also owned by Cablevision.
