A Culture That Does Not Support Learning—Agile practices weave nicely into lean thinking. One of the seven tenets of lean thinking is “amplify learning.” Like No. 1, an agile adoption effort that neither supports learning and retrospection at the team level nor elevates it to the organizational level will result in frustration and rejection of the approach. 12. Denial Is Embraced Instead of the Brutal Truth—The final truth about agile adoption is that it requires brutal honesty. Organizations must be willing to accept the truth of the high visibility this approach brings. Additionally, agile’s daily meetings, task boards, and time-boxed inspection of priorities, estimates, assumptions, and issues must be embraced as necessary for improved value delivery—not for individual or team punishment. So, as you consider your move to agile, or if you are in the midst of an agile adoption that is causing you pain with no gain, consider this list of twelve signs that your adoption really may not be about agile. Rather, you may be sitting in a Potemkin village of agile facades that needs razing before your adoption truly can be considered agile. {end} Jean Tabaka, with Rally Software Development, specializes in coaching agile software teams and organizations. A SNEAK PEAK OF WHAT’S COMING UP IN THE NEXT ISSUE OF BETTER SOFTWARE MAGAZINE Closing out 2007, our December issue is full of valuable information to drive your products to success in the new year. DECEMBER’S FEATURE ARTICLES INCLUDE The conclusion of this month’s article “A Story about User Stories and Test-Driven Development” in which the authors continue to explore some subtle pitfalls of TDD, discovered through their substantial experience. They present a number of risks of TDD and methods for mitigating those risks. Michele Sliger explains the important role that personal values play in our decisions. Organizations often begin with a mission statement and expect it to drive behavior. But all it does is drive the definition of subsidiary goals and objectives. It does not guarantee that people will work together to achieve those goals. Jonathan Kohl's feature article describes a view of test automation that is not an effort to replace all manual tests, but a style of automation that focuses on extending the capabilities of the tester with automation support. Interactive Automated Testing provides an opportunity to test applications in different, effective, and exciting ways.
