If anything, H.264 is just beginning to gain traction. The signs are everywhere. Starting with IBC2004 in Amsterdam in early September, where Apple showed off an H.264 codec that yielded much better results than it did even at its impressive NAB debut, the general acceptance of H.264 as a viable standards-based alternative to proprietary codecs has been gathering steam. —Tim Siglin APRIL 6 AKAMAI-SPEEDERA: THE INDUSTRY RESPONDS The recent announcement of Akamai’s acquisition of Speedera ends one era in the content delivery network (CDN) industry, but opens the door to increased competition, especially in the streaming market. The AkamaiSpeedera relationship, prior to the recent announcement, was marked by animosity between the two companies, including lawsuits, and an intensive “anti-Akamai” marketing campaign by Speedera. —TS OCT. 11 FLASH 8 VIDEO: FLASH IN THE PAN OR SERIOUS CONTENDER? Oh My! Don’t say Douglas McIntyre didn’t warn the industry. At the 2005 Streaming Media East show in New York, McIntyre, the chairman and CEO of On2 Technologies, was one of three panelists speaking at a session dealing with the future of internet video. Since the topic was open source video compression technologies, he only mentioned as an aside the fact that the industry would see On2’s last-generation VP6 compression technology under a new name—Flash 8 video—within the coming months. But with Flash 8 now on the market and Flash Player 8.5 set to launch on Oct. 17 at Macromedia’s MAX conference, McIntyre’s aside takes on much more importance. Early indications are that Flash 8 video files, which can be downloaded as standalone files (.flv) or as part of an interactive Flash file (.swf), rival H.264 and VC-1 at certain data rates. —TS NOV. 1 COMMENTARY: HELL FREEZES OVER—REAL AND MICROSOFT TO COLLABORATE Order at: http://www.streaming media.com/magazine/ On Oct. 11, Microsoft and RealNetworks announced a deal to set aside their legal differences and agreed to work together on a broad product front. While the agreement looks like a smart move for Real and Microsoft’s overall business, in the long run it may in fact limit technology innovation … It resolves the companies’ former antitrust disputes based on a $460 million up-front cash payment by Microsoft to Real; it calls for wide-ranging digital music and games collaboration between the parties; and it requires Microsoft to pay Real $301 million in cash as well as provide services over 18 months in support of Real’s product development, distribution, and promotional activities. —DR 56 STREAMING MEDIA April/May 2008 http://KANGAROO.TV http://www.streamingmedia.com/magazine/
