Streaming Media White Paper 2008 - (Page 10) 10 Best Practices: HOW TO PROFIT FROM INTERNET TV public internet viewers of a 300Kbps live video stream (that’s 300Mbps, mind you). You will want to outsource the bandwidth replication to a content distribution network (CDN) that handles the traffic for you. That discussion might be difficult for you, both in terms of the CDN’s required bandwidth commitment level and in terms of technical complexity. Some CDNs won’t work if you have a firewall. If your live video has special content value (for example,a live concert or a high school or college sporting event), your IT staff may not have the skills to implement pay per view for your broadcast, to insert pre-roll or post-roll video advertising, or to select third-party banner ads. On the other hand, if you already have an ecommerce capability, adding live video to your existing site may be easy. The decision to make vs. buy may be based on financial considerations. VSaaS is an operational expense (OPEX) while purchasing a VBrick appliance is a capital expense (CAPEX). Figure 1. VBrick Online Streaming Service (VBoss) VBoss is a family of VSaaS products that currently includes VBoss Engage and VBoss Broadcast. VBoss Engage is a comprehensive video service that instantly delivers your live video from anywhere and any time and displays it on a customized viewing portal with your private branding. Engage allows you to designate your broadcast as free, advertising supported, or pay per view. VBoss Broadcast is a simple live video service that provides cut-and-paste code to insert your live video into your own website and also provides template-driven viewing pages. Both products also provide for the recording of your live event and the publishing of the recorded video. The key to VBoss simplicity is the VBrick appliance itself, coupled with the VBoss service provisioning and management system (see Figure 1). The VBrick appliance may be located virtually anywhere and connected to the public internet via wired or wireless connections (including cellular data service). You can literally drop the VBrick in a mail pouch and expect to see video as soon as it is received by a nontechnical user and plugged in. Even though the appliance is behind a firewall, the VBoss server will automatically configure it for you and deliver your live video to your branded web page. A key benefit of VBoss is that the service includes total support. For VBoss, the VBrick appliance can be remotely accessed by VBrick service personnel (even though it is behind a firewall and has a local DHCP-assigned address). This innovation allows rapid problem resolution without the assistance of on-site personnel (often impossible when broadcasting from a high school football field). back office engine for your webpages and management.VBoss Engage customers utilize the Akamai network, which provides some of the best scaling performance in the industry and is necessary for large streaming events supporting many thousands of live viewers. VBoss Broadcast provisions service from Akamai, PowerStream, and other CDNs, depending on your needs. The cost to deliver live streaming is more than the cost of equipment and bandwidth. Professional Quality There is a clear difference between free “desktop curiosity” video delivered from a cheap webcam connected to a laptop computer and 30 frames-per-second, fullmotion, professional live video. Beyond audio/video compression quality, perhaps the most important aspect of professional Content Distribution Networks VBoss provisions your live and stored video using a selected CDN partner and the VBoss
