Utah Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 35) Large Photo: Rainbow Bridge National Monument, located on the shores of Lake Powell – FRED HIRSCHMANN Inset Photo: Gregory Butte on the shores of Lake Powell, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area – FRED HIRSCHMANN Rainbow Bridge National Monument is generally considered the largest natural bridge in the world. Carved from red Navajo sandstone, the bridge is 290 feet tall and 270 feet across – higher than the United States Capitol Building – and nearly as long as a football field! Considered sacred in Navajo culture, Rainbow Bridge is a symbol of deities responsible for creating rain, the essence of life in the desert. Rising up at the mouth of Bridge Canyon, in a cove on Lake Powell, the bridge can be reached by personal boats and watercraft, or boat cruises offered daily from Halls Crossing, Bullfrog or Wahweap Marinas. Rainbow Bridge can also be reached on foot or by horseback from the Navajo Nation, a permit is required for either of these options.
