Utah Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 38) Large Photo: Red Canyon Overlook, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area – JERRY SINTZ Inset Photo: The Green River meanders through Dinosaur National Monument– TOM TILL Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area John Wesley Powell named Flaming Gorge in 1846, after he and his men saw the sun reflecting off the canyon’s red rock walls during their historic float trip down the Green River. With more than 200,000 acres of land and water, Flaming Gorge is a scenic playground for boating, waterskiing, camping, rafting, and fishing from boat or shore, especially for trophy trout. Rock art and artifacts suggest members of the ancient Fremont Culture and later, Comanche, Shoshone and Ute tribes hunted game in the Gorge. Below Flaming Gorge dam, the Green River is renowned for its blue ribbon trout fishing and rafting. The recreation area offers a variety of campground and lodging facilities and hiking and back-country experiences.
