Suffolk University Sawyer Business School Graduate Programs 2008-2009 - (Page 38) MASTER OF HEALTH ADMINISTRATION in a previous job as a medical recruiter, Liz Geagan saw not only the wide variety of careers available in the healthcare field, but also the professional paths people took to get there. After a few years working at Tufts Medical Center, Liz began charting her own course. The first step was Suffolk. Liz Geagan MHA ’06 Administrative Director for the Endocrine Division, Massachusetts General Hospital hometown: Bernardsville, New Jersey undergraduate school: Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York “A master’s degree is becoming a more common requirement for advancement in this field,” she notes. “I was particularly excited about Suffolk’s MHA degree, because I wanted to focus exclusively on healthcare administration.” Suffolk’s course schedule also allowed Liz to keep her day job while attending classes at night. “It was the perfect fit.” The classes suited her as well. “The Suffolk MHA offers relevant, industry-specific courses that do a great job of preparing you for the everyday challenges of healthcare administration,” Liz says. Plus, the range of experience of her fellow students—doctors, nurses, hospital department managers, pharmaceutical representatives—allowed Liz the opportunity to gain valuable insight from myriad perspectives. She credits her classwork for her success in her current role as an administrative director at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she “makes sure everything flows”: from the front desk to human resources to fiscal management. “What I learned in my MHA program was immediately put to use in this job, especially in regards to the financial aspects of my responsibilities.
