Suffolk University Sawyer Business School Graduate Programs 2008-2009 - (Page 50) MASTER OF SCIENCE IN TAXATION Frank Seyboth MST ’96 Tax Reporting Director The Baupost Group, LLC, Boston, Massachusetts hometown: Mansfield, Massachuestts undergraduate school: Bentley College hard work and his suffolk education have translated into a successful tax career in the investment industry for Frank Seyboth. As tax reporting director for The Baupost Group, L.L.C., a Boston-based investment partnership managing more than $6 billion on behalf of individual and institutional clients, he does compliance work and tax accounting and manages a small group of tax professionals. “My tax foundation can be traced directly back to Suffolk,” says Frank, who had no tax experience before entering the MST program. Suffolk’s program couldn’t have been more convenient for Frank, who was then working at JPMorgan Chase, across the street from where his classes were held. He was able to complete the program as a part-time student while maintaining his full-time job. The program also enabled him to transition to a supervisory position on the tax side of JPMorgan. He eventually became a tax director, overseeing more than 30 employees. “At the time I decided to enter the tax field, it would have been extremely difficult to do so and stay at the same professional level without my MST degree,” Frank observes. In 2006, an opportunity to work at a small, highly successful firm arose. He decided this was the next logical step to take in his career. Now, in addition to settling in at Baupost, Frank is sharing some of his professional wisdom with current Suffolk MST students. He teaches Introduction to Taxation of Financial Instruments, a class he actually recommended adding to the curriculum when he was a student. For both Frank and Suffolk, the MST is paying valuable dividends. undergraduate major: Accounting work experience prior to suffolk: Coopers & Lybrand; JPMorgan Chase 50
