Visions - Summer 2007 - (Page 10) Marketing SCOA an International Presence on the Trade Show Circuit Industry Conferences a Key Driver for Networking and Business A ccording to Simmons Market Research Bureau, 91% of respondents ranked trade shows “extremely useful” as a source for purchasing information. Another survey conducted by Exhibit Surveys, Inc., an industry research and metrics firm, found that in the manufacturing/industrial sector, 84% of conference attendees were decision makers or decision influencers. With these statistics confirming anecdotal evidence about the efficacy of trade shows in driving business, many companies now include trade shows as part of their marketing budgets. Needless to say, trade shows are big business and participation in a trade show is a major marketing investment for companies. At Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA), participating in trade shows and industry conferences has become a key component of the marketing strategy of many of our business units. In 2007, SCOA business departments participated in at least three major industry trade shows. NYSCC Suppliers’ Day Tiffany Lewis, Sales Associate; Alice Tenny, Director Cosmetic Chemicals; Lori Bruno, Senior Sales Coordinator (missing in shot, but working the show, Shohei Shibukawa, Project Manager) of SCOA’s Performance Chemical Unit SCOA’s Performance Chemical unit exhibited at the nation’s largest cosmetic trade show, New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) Suppliers’ Day, on May 15th and May 16th at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, New Jersey. NYSCC Suppliers’ Day brings together suppliers and cosmetic chemists. The show featured all types of suppliers — raw material, fragrance, packaging, testing labs, and equipment— and just as many different kinds of chemists. The trade show was a unique opportunity for suppliers to meet the chemists and technicians that are ultimately responsible for formulating the products that go to market. This year’s Suppliers’ Day was very well attended, with over 4,000 attendees and close to 500 exhibitors. SCOA’s Performance Chemical booth featured a wide variety of cosmetic raw materials targeted to major manufacturers, specifically TiO2, spherical powders, specialty surfactants, and other active ingredients. These products find their way into a vast array of cosmetic applications including shower gels, lip balms, color cosmetics, and face scrubs. According to Alice Tenny, Director of Cosmetic Chemicals at SCOA, “The Performance Chemical unit mainly provides ingredients that are feel-enhancers, ingredients which give the finishing touch to the formula and make it feel more attractive.” Tayca Corporation, a Japanese manufacturing company and partner of SCOA, also exhibited at the Suppliers’ Show.Together they market micronized and pigmentary TiO2 to the sunscreen and cosmetic industry in the U.S. SCOA and Tayca announced their new distributor for micronized Titanium Dioxide, Presperse, at the trade show. Concerning future products, Ms.Tenny said “We are working on a new Titanium Dioxide product that actually cools the skin. This is the newest technology from Tayca Corporation and we highlighted this at the show. Formulated and evaluated by chemists at a major cosmetic manufacturer, we really believe it will be featured in a color cosmetic and launched in the marketplace by the end of the year.” 11th International Conference on Automated People Movers Meanwhile, SCOA’s Transportation Systems and Equipment department traveled to Europe to participate in the 11th International Conference on Automated People Movers (APM) which was held from April 22nd – April 25th at the Gallery of Research in historic Vienna, Austria. Attendees of the conference from SCOA, SC, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (MHI), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) split their time between their trade show booth and the numerous seminars which explored the impact and potential of the growing body of APM knowledge on the transportation industry. 10 visions Summer 2007
