Visions - Summer 2007 - (Page 11) Team members from SC, SCOA, MHI, and MHIA at their booth at the 11th annual Conference on Automated People Movers Sumitomo Metals and SCOA’s Steel Plate Department shared a booth at OTC 2007, above and right. VP of Transportation Equipment Systems Gino Antoniello talks to visitors at SCOA’s booth. The Offshore Technology Conference Information on cutting-edge technological improvements in the field was also presented. SCOA’s jointly-sponsored trade show booth showcased the Crystal Mover APM, the innovative vehicle designed by their long time project partner in North America, MHIA. In partnership with MHIA, Sumitomo is supplying several state-of-the-art automated APM systems in the U.S. (Washington Dulles International Airport, Miami International Airport, and Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport), and in Korea. The computer-controlled Crystal Mover vehicle which operates on rubber wheels along a guide-way is capable of speeds up to 50 miles per hour accommodating 100 people per vehicle. “This efficiency is one of the reasons so many airports and urban centers are looking to adopt this type of technology for their passenger transport systems in the near future,” said VP of Transportation Systems Gino Antoniello. Networking with potential customers extended into the evenings with special events including a dinner at City Hall hosted by the Mayor of Vienna and a special reception hosted by SCOA in their hospitality suite at the Hilton. Judging from the constant stream of visitors to the SCOA booth and this year’s record attendance, the bi-yearly APM conference continues to be a major draw for the industry to learn about and discuss APM projects and technology, and for SCOA to court potential new customers. SCOA also participated in the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), which ranks among the largest 200 trade shows in the United States and is among the 10 largest meetings in terms of participation. The Offshore Technology Conference is the world’s premier event for the development of offshore resources in drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection. The 2007 OTC, which was attended by SCOA’s Chicago-based Steel Plate department and Sumitomo Metal, reached a 25-year high for attendance with 67,155 participants from 110 countries, up 13% from the 59,236 attendees in 2006. “The impressive increase in attendance reflects the strong state of the industry,” said Arnis Judzis, 2007 OTC chairman. SCOA announced its re-entry into the plate market field at the 2007 OTC. “We had over 200 visitors to the booth for further development of business with us,” said Scott Nakada of SCOA’s Chicago Steel Plate division, “and this was the first time for Sumitomo Plate to have a booth presence at OTC,” he added. Steel plate is used in bridges, tanks, and high rise buildings, as well as in off-shore projects in the Gulf of Mexico, at a depth of 4000-5000 feet. “Thanks to high oil and gas prices, oil companies are aggressive to make investments in deep water exploration,” said Mr. Nakada. In addition to supplying steel plate for off-shore floating structures, SCOA Steel Plate is also interested in increasing business in other markets requiring their products and will look for future marketing opportunities such as OTC.
