Visions - Summer 2007 - (Page 13) Out of 109 companies in the United States listed in the API composite index, only 29 have all three quality management system certifications. SCOA bought us.There’s been a fundamental improvement in how we treat our people: benefits, incentives, and recognizing what our workers bring to the table each day.” Thanks to Unique Machine’s presence in the community, the company enjoys a reputation larger than its actual size. “There’s a perception here that we’re a very large company and that’s because of how we’ve marketed ourselves and the events we participate in in the community,” said Hanley. “The U.S. National Downhill Ski Championships were recently held in Girdwood, Alaska. In conjunction with ConocoPhillips, we built ski racks for the event. We’re also one of the major sponsors of the Robert Burns Supper, which is probably Anchorage, Alaska’s most-enjoyed black tie event. It’s held annually to celebrate the life of Scottish poet Robert Burns, who has had a lasting influence on Scottish people around the world. We made shields for the major corporate sponsors.” Robert Burns Day suppers have been held on January 25th internationally for over 200 years. Unique Machine is also still connected to the everyday customer, what they call the “cash customer.” Over the years, Unique Machine has manufactured everything from urns to titanium wedding rings, prosthetic hips, and even a dental cap for an elephant. “We manufacture product for the oil and gas industry predominantly,” said Hanley, “but we also have the overhaul and repair part of our business, and those who come in off the street with fix-its and science projects.” With fellow Alaska-based SCOA subsidiary Tubular Solutions Alaska, the two companies can supply a complete line of products and services to major operators in Alaska. “Nowhere else in the world is there the expertise we have in these two subsidiaries,” said Pat Hanley. “We could offer an oil company an entire well. We have the expertise to supply the entire thing.” For more information contact Pat Hanley at Pat.Hanley@umalaska.com or visit the website at www.umalaska.com.
