Visions - Summer 2007 - (Page 2) From the Editors Dear Visions Readers: S Artist’s rendering of departure stage engines firing to take the Orion CEV and a lunar lander out of earth’s orbit. Image credit: NASA ummer is traditionally a slow period for many corporations, but here at SCOA, it’s been anything but. Not only has it been a busy summer, but it’s also been one of important management successions both here at SCOA and at SC. We began the summer with former President & CEO, Susumu Kato, being appointed to the position of President and CEO of Sumitomo Corporation, our parent company in Japan. Likewise, here in the States, we welcomed our new President & CEO, Michihisa Shinagawa, who quickly transitioned into his new position as the head of SCOA and the GM of SC Americas. You can find out more about Mr. Shinagawa and his background and corporate vision in an interview on the following pages. In addition to these significant management changes, our business units and subsidiaries were also very busy this summer. For starters, three business units went out on the industry trade show circuit attending important industry conferences and conventions to build awareness for their businesses and products and gain important industry contacts. You can read about their marketing achievements in this issue. Our Transportation Systems and Equipment department marked a milestone this summer when they traveled to Washington D.C. to welcome the arrival of the first Automated People Mover vehicles for their project with Washington Dulles International Airport. It’s also been a very busy season for some of our subsidiaries and one of our joint-venture companies. In Alaska, SC Minerals America’s investment has helped bring Pogo Gold Mine online, and it is expected to produce 400,000 ounces of gold per year over its 10-year lifespan. Also in Alaska, subsidiary Unique Machine “put themselves on the clock” to get important quality certifications that put them into an elite group of machine shops. Meanwhile joint-venture company HSSSI was awarded a contract to supply 13 key systems for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle as part of NASA’s next generation of space travel. We hope your summer has been as productive as ours and that you will enjoy reading about our business highlights in this issue of Visions.
