Steel & Non-Ferrous Metal Group The Power of Wind Fuels the Power of Business SCOA’s Wind Power Business Experiences Successful Expansion across United States T he wind power markets have experienced an international boom in recent years. According to the World Wind Energy Association, the current wind power operations across the globe generate 200 terawatts per year, equaling 1.3 % of the global electricity consumption. In some countries and regions, wind energy already contributes 40% of the country’s energy grid. The total amount of electricity that could potentially be generated from wind in the United States alone has been estimated at 10,777 billion kilowatt-hours annually – more than twice the electricity generated in the U.S. today. These facts spell out one incontrovertible fact: wind power is not just environmentally responsible, it is also smart business; as a result of this increased interest in this industry, many new business ventures have developed throughout the supply chain of wind power generation. According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), American wind farms will generate enough wind energy in 2008 to power the equivalent of over 4.5 billion homes. These wind farms, which generate power with the use of wind towers, and at least 14 new manufacturing facilities for wind towers and components were opened or were announced in 2007. Not to miss out on this opportunity, Katana SUMMIT, the partnership of Sumitomo Corporation of America and T. Bailey Inc. (through affiliate Katana Industries, Inc.), was formed in 2007 to meet the ever-growing demand for these wind energy structures (the venture reflects a joint contribution by SCOA and Sumitomo Corporation of 50% capital contribution, with T. Bailey supplying the other 50%). T. Bailey, primarily a manufacturer of steel tanks, saw the lucrative potential of manufacturing towers nearly seven years ago, and began manufacturing the towers that measure as tall as 100 meters. By creating towers in two dedicated facilities, Katana SUMMIT attempts to supply wind farm construction and development in the Midwest and Northwest market with an eye to connecting with wind power suppliers across America and beyond. “The year 2007, all in all, was a very successful year for the wind industry worldwide,” said Dr Anil Kane, President of the World Wind Energy Association.“And 18 countries have been able to increase the volume of additional capacity.” Luckily, the United States is one of those countries. The U.S. Department of Energy announced a goal of obtaining 6% of U.S. electricity from wind by 2020, a goal that is consistent with the current rate of growth of wind energy nationwide. Utility-scale wind power projects now under construction or under negotiation will add at least 5,000 MW of wind capacity in the U.S. over the next five years. The AWEA reports that Texas, California, Minnesota, Iowa and Washington lead the nation in wind power capacity, which is reflected in the creation of new industry jobs and manufacturing business opportunities in those states — even the states that do not have a large wind resource. 6 visions Fall 2008
