According to the American Wind Energy Association, American wind farms will generate enough wind energy in 2008 to power the equivalent of over 4.5 billion homes. Katana SUMMIT supports and operates one plant in Euphrata,WA, and one plant in Columbus, Nebraska. Production at the Ephrata plant began in 2007, and the Columbus plant, which employs about 200 workers, celebrated its opening this past June. The projected 2008 output split between the two plants is 200 towers for the Euphrata operation, and 100 towers for the new Columbus plant (the capacity of the Columbus plant is currently 200 towers a year, but the output of 2008 is half of capacity due to their startup in June). Total investment in the project will reach nearly $40 million, with annual expected sales of over $300 million in three years, according to SCOA Railroad Forging and Casting unit in Chicago.According to Mr.Yuichi Ogawa, product manager in the unit, SCOA also believes that demand will increase steadily, with a newly projected demand for over 5,000 towers per year, up from a projected 3,000 just one year ago. This unit not only provides management support for Katana SUMMIT from an investor’s standpoint, but supports the supply of plates and flanges (raised-rim fittings) used in the structure of the towers. Part of the credit for the massive growth in the U.S. wind industry markets goes to the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) for developers of wind power.Although the current status of the PTC seems up in the air due to legislative uncertainly, Ogawa remains confident that business will not be affected due to the improving cost-effectiveness of wind power operation. “PTC definitely helps the growth of industry,” Ogawa said. “It will end by the end of 2008, and there is no news yet for further extension for another year.
