MACHINERY & POWER BUSINESS GROUP SMS Equipment Inc. 40 r s! Yea S umitomo Corporation (SC) began a construction equipment related business in Canada in 1972, known as Komatsu Canada Ltd (KCL), a wholesaler of Komatsu products. In the 1990’s, Sumitomo acquired, through KCL, Komatsu equipment dealers across Canada to enter the retail market. As business grew, so did KCL (now SMS Construction and Mining Systems Inc., hereafter SMS-C), and Sumitomo soon emerged as an overall market leader, a position it still enjoys today. SMS Equipment Inc. (SMS-E) is a member of the SMS-C group and currently holds a unique position in the industry as a one-stop supplier of the most complete range of equipment. SMS-E offers only world-renowned brand names that meet standards of reliability and productivity, and can also offer a select range of production attachments for specific market segments such as construction, forestry, mining and utility industries. SMS-E continuously analyzes the market and provides its customers with all the equipment they require in the most diverse applications, supplying world-renowned brand equipment including Komatsu,Wirtgen, Kleemann,Vögele, Hamm, Genesis, Indeco, Sandvik and others. In 2008, three Canadian equipment dealers, Federal Equipment, Coneco Equipment, and Transwest Mining Systems merged to become SMS-E, one of the largest Komatsu equipment dealers in the world with a network of business centers across Canada. With Federal Equipment forming in 1952, Coneco in 1966, and Transwest in 1986, the cumulative experience brings some of the most creative, unique, and productive solutions in the appropriate industries, whether it is construction, forestry, or mining. “SMS Equipment Inc. is the largest Komatsu dealer in North America,” explained Kaz Yasuda, President of SMS-C, “covering almost all of Canada as its territory. To clarify, the SMS-C group is composed of SMS-E; SMS Rents, which is a general equipment rental house; and H&R Construction Parts & Equipment, which deals with used parts. The annual sales volume of this combined group in the last year was over $1.6 billion Canadian, a record high.” SMS-E currently has 40 locations across Canada with more than 2000 employees. Yasuda notes that the province of Nova Scotia and the southern part of Ontario are not SMS-E’s territory, although that may change in the future. “SMS-E is always trying to increase Komatsu’s market share in its territory by working together,” Yasuda said. “SMS-E’s primary focus is selling Komatsu products in the market, but selling only the Komatsu products does not speak to the customers’ needs. SMS-E is a customer-focused company, and its vision is to be the number one equipment and solutions provider to our customer. Now, number one here does not mean first in market share, lowest price, or volume. It means the best total package. It means that SMS-E is the first thought when a customer needs something. We at SMS-E believe that is the key to growth.” Yasuda explained that customer satisfaction continues to be a top priority, with services continuously expanding to meet emerging customer needs. “Today, SMS-E provides customers with various services including welding and fabrication, custom design to meet with customer’s needs, remanufacturing components, and so on,” Yasuda said. “In order to provide these services, SMS-E gained the support of SC and SCOA to make a large investment in facilities and tools. Consistently, we have proven that our business can grow even more than what we thought possible.” For more information, contact Kaz Yasuda at kyasuda@smscons.com 12 v i s i o n s F a l l 2 0 1 2
