TRANSPORTATION BUSINESS Providing Parts, Pieces and Plants As Part of the Game Plan C ars put passengers on the road, and can be interpreted as the "connective tissue" of the transportation infrastructure. Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA) has helped develop this connective tissue, via its association with the car industry for decades. SCOA's Automotive Business Unit - located in New York and Detroit - is dedicated to the business of supplying parts for cars, providing test equipment, running dealerships, manufacturing of vehicle parts, and pretty soon, manufacturing of vehicles as well. SCOA provides best-in-class automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components from Japanese suppliers for major automotive customers, such as Ford and General Motors, and heavy truck manufacturers Navistar. These components also make their way to major Tier 1 suppliers such as Visteon and Delphi. SCOA business strategy moving forward is to concentrate on the value-added products for emission control and related parts like exhaust treatment, as well as infotainment parts, such as touch screen panel devices. Our Mazda Mexico project, located in Salamanca City, is an automotive plant that recently completed construction. The plant is currently testing equipment and mechanisms in its mass production operation, with cars slated to come off the production line in 2014. Hirotec Mexico, headquartered in Silao, Mexico, has been supplying closures like doors, roofs, fenders, and hoods for a car manufacturer for many years. This is a unique position for a manufacturer, since these parts are usually produced by the car makers themselves.
