hen speaking of infrastructure, we can even look
to the sky for Sumitomo Corporation of America's
(SCOA) continued involvement in the area of
aerospace systems and technology business. SCOA has
been cultivating a relationship with United Technologies
Corporation (UTAS) affiliate Hamilton Sundstrand (HSC) for
40 years. From components for Boeing's latest airliners to
life-support systems for space suits, Hamilton Sundstrand
has partnered with SCOA to supply products that both reach
for the sky and are out of this world.
"We started our relationship with Hamilton Sundstrand,
which is now part of UTAS, back in the 1970s," explained
Takao Kusaka, Vice President of SCOA's Transportation
Business Unit in the Machinery and Power Business Group.
"Sumitomo's primary business with UTAS is to represent
their products in the areas of defense and space in the
Japanese market. We have been marketing and selling their
products to Japanese clients as their sole representative for
decades. The business volume has been steadily growing
primarily because HSC has acquired several companies, and
our products range has been increased."
The relationship began in the late 1980s and early 1990
when Sumitomo was helping Hamilton Sundstrand market
and sell its products and technology to Japanese industrial
companies like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki
Heavy Industries, and IHI Aerospace. In 1994, SCOA and
SC's Aerospace Group explored ways to strengthen the
three companies, so United Technologies, SC and SCOA
formed Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International.
This then helped foster a steady business related to the
International Space Station, including use of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), or spacesuit, which space
engineers wore while constructing the station.
"In terms of our 'space' business," Kusaka said, "we
established a joint venture with UTAS to be involved in the
technology transfer and hardware sales of specific space
technologies for the International Space Station, and other
Japanese space vehicles. The total business to Japanese
clients is over 100 million dollars in sales."
"Sumitomo/UTAS has been discussing what additional
value Sumitomo can bring into UTAS," continued Kusaka.
"Since UTAS focus has been shifting to commercial aircraft
business, which needs an enormous amount of up-front,
nonrecurring investment needed for design and engineering, UTAS approached us to serve as a risk-revenue
sharing partner. Since then, we have been involved in two
risk-revenue sharing programs with UTAS -- one for the
ERJ-170-190 program and the other for the Boeing 787."
Kusaka points out that the merger of Goodrich Corporation
and UTAS now places UTAS as a super tier-1 system supplier.
"That makes their revenue approach $13 billion now,"
Kusaka said. "As a result, Sumitomo is reforming our
support team to strengthen our proposed value to them,
with a goal of expanding our business together in Japan
and exploring more options in the commercial aviation
business together.
