ithin the processes of infrastructure, logistics is a key
element, serving as the worldwide connector through
the organizational framework of delivery and storage.
Celebrating its 30th year, Sumisho Global Logistics USA (SGL)
performs two simple functions. One aspect is to perform as the
logistics and insurance department, as well as traffic department,
for Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA) and Sumitomo
Canada Ltd. (SCL). Their scope of work spreads across logistics
compliance, border protection-related issues with customs, logistics arrangement, confirmation of delivery, marine insurance,
and inventory management in day-to-day business transactions.
The company's other function is to be an international logistics
service provider. SGL is a non-asset type ocean carrier - that is to
say, it does not own any vessels - and a full service logistics
company licensed with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC)
as a Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC). The company also has a U.S. domestic license from the U.S. Department
of Transportation (DOT). SGL is working globally and handles
shipments not only between the U.S. and Japan, but also to and
from South East Asia, South America and Europe, cooperating
with other SGL Group companies and Sumitomo Corporation
Logistics Division.
Using superior logistics services as a strategic tool is essential in
today's competitive market. The SGL group logistics network,
with over 30 offices in Japan, China, SE Asia, Europe, and the
Americas, can communicate globally by using their collective
knowledge of global business along with their expertise of international transportation. They can provide total seamless logistics
management to clients. Approximately 3,000 employees are
engaged in SGL group in their worldwide network.
SGL was created in 1983 - called "Sumitrans" at the time - from
the Traffic Division of SCOA. The major force in creating Sumitrans was the proposed change to the Shipping Act of 1916,

which had little to no change for over 60 years. The Shipping Act
of 1984, which was an open market policy designed to increase
competition, was also a factor in the creation of Sumitrans.
One of the new aspects of the Shipping Act grants carriers the
ability to offer "service contracts," in which large volume shippers can negotiate for discounted freight rates with carriers. In
other words, with this change, a company which does not own
vessels can do international logistics business as a carrier. This
was the key factor for SCOA's traffic department to establish
"Sumitrans." SCOA's Traffic Department turned these changes
into an opportunity to start an international logistics business in
the U.S.
SGL was the first Sumitomo Corporation Group logistics subsidiary in the world, establishing itself as a leader of international
logistics company among Japanese trading houses. In the
NVOCC ranking of container handling volume Japan to U.S.,
SGL has made the top 10 in the recent decade.
As a traffic department, SGL monitors and processes imports, international traffic, inventories, and compliance on a daily basis in
conjunction with other administrative groups, handling insurance
claims, and arranging for transit and inventory insurance. As international logistics department, SGL acts as a logistics provider
for the Sumitomo Corporation Group, their subsidiaries and external clients. This is the company's core business, an area it has
been excelling in for over three decades. SGL's agreements with
multiple steamship lines allow their service to span the globe. A
flexible line of services accommodates the trade's cargo-ready
dates, transit time requirements and price points. Because it is in
a customer's best interest to know the location and status of their
products day or night, no matter what time zone, SGL's real-time
web-based tracking system allows their staff and/or customers
to retrieve information around the clock.
