INSIGHT Steel Group General Manager Talks about Strength of Steel Mr. Kenji Iijima, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Steel & Non-Ferrous Metal Group, gave us some insight into the role of steel in infrastructure projects specific to the rail industry. In the United States as well as around the world, the framework of infrastructure relies heavily on steel, and consequently the steel industry. How is our Steel & Non-Ferrous Metal Business Group involved in supplying steel to these infrastructure projects? The main steel products we are handling for infrastructure, specifically for rail systems, are rail, tie plates, wheels and axles. To break it down, the rail is imported from Japan, the tie plate is domestic supply, and the wheel & axle are both Japanese import and domestic supply. We are also looking for an opportunity to promote steel plate and rolled shapes for offshore structures, specific to oil & gas drilling, so that we can explore synergy with our Tubular Business Group. infrastructure development.A stable supply is always required and reliable quality is indispensable, but constant technical development is always expected, so that is where the change occurs. What is the key to longstanding relationships in the steel industry, such as our rail business with Canadian National Railway and Union Pacific? How did the acquisition of Standard Steel help SCOA overall? The key to this relationship is to support their technical development and to bring additional value to our customers. We have been growing together for a very long time, with the mutual goal of success through communication. This has led to a deeper understanding of our business. We are supporting the technical development of better products as well. The aim is to supply high quality rails and wheels with greater longevity, and that longevity is linked to creating products with superior strength & resilience. We are seeing a lot of synergy arising from the acquisition in our wheel and axle business, and not only for sales promotion. We also want to be a company that can impact the industry in terms of technical issues. Our plan is to expand our synergy to other businesses in the railroad industry. We are considering supporting endeavors that exist between wheels (on the railcar side) and rails (on the track side) by promoting new technology to help establish matching surfaces in products. Railroads are required to have wheels & rails with longer life, resulting in less maintenance costs, and we support that technical development. How has the role of steel changed in U.S. business, and how has it stayed consistent? As far as we understand, the role of steel in the construction of structures and rail systems has been a constant not only in the U.S., but all over the world. Steel is one of the most cost effective raw materials on earth, and a basic material for 4 v i s i o n s F a l l 2 0 1 3 How did we develop our business in steel structures for offshore oil wells? We are at the stage of developing our steel business for offshore structures. The relationship with oil & gas industries which have been created by our Tubular Business Group is a key element to develop and expand this business.
