STRUCTURAL BUSINESS
Consolidated
Systems Inc.
T
he strength of a building depends on its structure; the roof,
floors, and connecting components serve as the true framework upon which a trusted edifice is erected. Sumitomo
Corporation of America (SCOA) has been a minority owner of Consolidated Systems Inc. (CSi) since January 2011, hoping to use its steel
business line and construction partnerships to erect an upstream/
downstream framework for success. Kazumitsu Takeoka, Director,
SCOA's Steel and Non-Ferrous Metal Group in Chicago, stated that
CSi's strength is that it connects the steel business to construction
with an eye on the continued U.S. population growth, and therefore,
increased infrastructure business in all areas in the future.
"The United States is the one and only developed country where population will increase in the future," explained Takeoka. "And we can
expect lots of demand for steel for construction. On the other hand,
the construction business is very cyclical, and that profitability is depending on the economic situation, but we acknowledge that this
company has the following strengths to overcome that concern:
Firstly, Consolidated Systems is manufacturing specialty products
under its unique design and engineering capability; it is an integrated
operation from upstream (coil coating) to downstream (deck products and components). Additionally, we can expect synergy with our
existing group companies, including the Steel Summit Holdings and
Steel Summit International, as well as the established SCOA trade
operation within the Chicago Office, all of whom are doing business
in the construction field. Lastly, we value CSi's management and
human resources organization, and its philosophies are very similar
to those of Sumitomo."
Taking its place in the construction world as a trusted manufacturer,
Consolidated Systems Inc. provides coil coating as well as metal processing and fabrication, with a focus on the manufacturing and sales of
metal roof, composite floor, form, and bridge deck systems. Theseoften
complex overall "product systems" can create a full structure, or merely
supply support components for another structure. These systems have
brought beauty and strength to impressive projects from Busch
Stadium to Coors Field, from Charlotte International Airport to Austin
International Airport, from William and Mary University in Williamsburg,
Virginia, to Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
With administrative and manufacturing headquarters and factory in
Columbia, South Carolina, CSi has established satellite factories in
Memphis, Tennessee; Terrell, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Harrisonburg, Virginia. CSi provides its customers top quality products through
three companies: Metal Dek Group®, Consolidated Metal Products®
Group (CMP™), and Consolidated Components Group™ (CCG™), and
all have the ability to incorporate CSi's different trademarked metal
treatment processes called "Engineered Solutions™", which can vary
the color, strength and weather resistance of its products.
Firstly, Metal Dek Group® manufactures and supports a complete line
of metal roof, floor and form "deck systems", which means a complete
architecturally-planned product framework for CSi's structural and
architectural applications. Their brands Versa-Floor®, Versa-Dek®,
Deep-Dek®, Curve Dek™, Deep-Dek® Composite all cater to specific
architectural needs. All these deck systems offer additional possibilities
for acoustical capability and painted metal finishes. Especially, VersaFloor® is a family of structural systems engineered to address market
specific building requirements and it blends steel's speed and versatility with concrete's performance and durability.Versa-Floor® outperforms traditional floor systems in material weight, aesthetics,
construction speed and safety. And Metal Dek Group manufactures
and supports Bridge Dek®, a product line of stay-in-place deck forms
for bridge construction, offering profiles that can accommodate design
spans up to 14 feet, and can be produced with Rhino-Dek®, a super
laminate that adds an impervious barrier against salt and brackish conditions.
Secondly, Consolidated Metal Products® Group (CMP™) manufactures and supplies painted metal (steel & aluminum) systems to the
construction, appliance, and transportation industries. CSi produced
panels are roll-formed from Versa-Steel; Versa-Steel metal is cleaned,
leveled, pretreated, primed and painted for full protection on state-ofthe-science coil paint lines operated by CMP™. Versa-Clear™ is available for a bare metal look without compromising protection; custom
colors and color matching can be done in house. As an industry expert
in metallurgy and coatings, CMP™ excels at meeting exacting painted
metal specifications, and its single-source manufacturing and quality
control simplify customer-partner supply chains. CMP™'s manufacturing processes are certified by ABS Quality Evaluations, Inc. and have
received ISO Certification.
Lastly, Consolidated Components Group™ (CCG™), comprises a
compilation of more than four decades of corporate company expertise with coil coating and roll-forming steel, with standard and custom
paint finishes available. CCG™ also manufactures metal roofing, siding
panels and from Versa-Steel®, and its metal roofing & siding panels
are engineered to precision specifications for coating performance &
profile strength.
With 57.8% of CSi still owned by the company's founder and his
family, SCOA's ownership percentage is 29.54%, with Sumitomo
Corporation (SC) owning 12.66% in this endeavor. Takeoka said this
investment transaction will enable the Steel and Non-Ferrous Metal
Group to enter into flat-rolled construction products.
"The business has grown in stages," Takeoka explained. "We now
look to establish a value chain between upstream and downstream,
and establish a presence in the U.S. construction steel industry."
