Visions - Spring 2008 - (Page 12) Aerospace & Defense SCOA Helps Mitsubishi Regional Jet Take Flight S umitomo is working to help Japan’s nextgeneration regional aircraft take flight. Through its over 40-year relationship with Hamilton Sundstrand, an affiliate of United Technologies Corporation, and their current business with Japan’s Ministry of Defense, Sumitomo Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation of America is helping supply key components to help Mitsubishi Regional Jet’s dreams come true. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) officially launched the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), a nextgeneration regional jetliner recently. As Japan's first company to manufacture and market original passenger jetliners, Mitsubishi Aircraft will fulfill a long-cherished wish of the Japanese aircraft industry, leveraging technological expertise that MHI has built up through its aerospace business. The creation of the MRJ signifies the manufacturing of the first new Japanese aircraft in a generation. The last major aircraft developed and built in Japan was theYS11, a turboprop plane manufactured by the Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing consortium from 1962 to 1973. A regional jet is defined as a smaller commercial plane with a range of nearly 2,000 miles aimed at medium-sized markets. Looking to be the world’s “greenest” aircraft, the MRJ boasts a 20-30% fuel reduction over current competitors, along with reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The MRJ is also designed to meet the International Civil Aviation Authority’s most stringent noise requirements. Hamilton Sundstrand (HSC) will supply several key systems to Mitsubishi Regional Jet.These systems include the electrical power system, an air management system, an auxiliary power unit, an inert gas system, a high lift actuation system, and a fire and overheat protection system. HSC’s nitrogen inert-gas system is the first of its kind for a regional jet and only the second to occur in commercial jets since the Boeing 787. The creation of the MRJ signifies the manufacturing of the first new Japanese aircraft in a generation. The MRJ is a 70–90 seat class regional jet currently being developed by MHI with cutting-edge technology that will enable dual achievement of top-class operational economy and outstanding cabin comfort. The MRJ will be the first regional jet to adopt composite materials for its wings and vertical fins on significant scale. In combination with new engines and an advanced aerodynamic design, the aircraft is being designed to reduce fuel consumption substantially, and to contribute greatly to enhanced competitiveness and lower operating costs for the airline companies. 12 visions Spring | Summer 2008
