Through its varied automotive-related relationships with suppliers and customers, SCOA’s Automotive Manufacturing Business Unit (with headquarters in Detroit) is dedicated to two areas of business. (Continued on page 9) THE BODY The long history of automotive manufacturing wouldn’t be possible without one key element: steel. Aluminum and fiberglass have made their way into the world of automotive body elements, but a majority of cars on the road today contain steel as a fundamental element of their body, as well as some original and replacement auto parts. (Continued on page 7) SCOA Automotive THE MUSCLE It can be said that a car without a crankshaft is sort of like a body without muscle. A key part of what makes a car run comes from the crankshaft, sometimes referred to as the crank. It is the part of an engine which translates reciprocating piston motion into rotating motion. (Continued on page 6) THE JUICE In the past 10 years, low emission vehicles have become an attractive option for more drivers. The role of SCOA in this progressive market currently involves supplying hybrid cars with battery components and battery production options, a task that SCOA has been taking on twofold.
