Continued Keeping Your Pets’ Teeth Clean We asked Dr. Melinda Fernyhough (a veterinarian who is also Hartz’s Manager of Scientific Affairs, Research and Development) to explain the finer points of dental health among dogs and cats. Is periodontal disease widespread in domestic animals? Oral disease is the most common disease diagnosed in dogs and cats during a veterinary exam. In fact, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of three and, if not treated, will ultimately progress to the more severe, irreversible periodontal disease. Even with a professional dental cleaning, plaque begins to form within 20 minutes and, if not removed, can begin to form tartar in two to three days.
