Unique Machine Prospers in Alaska A s Alaska’s largest machine shop, our subsidiary Unique Machine has been serving the fishing, mining, construction and oilfield industries since its founding in 1973. Acquired by SCOA in 2004, Unique Machine made its mark in oilfield manufacturing and threading support early on, but soon expanded to serve the machining needs of other industries. Specific to the oil and gas industry, Unique Machine holds proprietary technology licenses for threading services from most of the major technology companies based in both the U.S. and abroad. Meeting the challenge of expanding business opportunities, Unique Machine opened the Alaska Technology Center near their headquarters in Anchorage, Alaska, in June of 2009. This 13-acre campus boasts multiple buildings for storage, machining and fabrication, along with seven acres of new pavement for staging areas. A campus rail spur allows Unique Machine the ability to ship heavy loads anywhere on the rail system and to rail-barge export from Alaska’s ports to anywhere in the Pacific Rim. Bolstering Alaska’s economy as a thriving company, Unique Machine received a landmark citation from the Alaska State Legislature in 2011 to honor the company’s far-reaching contributions to Alaska’s economy for over 30 years. The company’s growth is closely tied to the maturation of the state of Alaska and its economy, with a simple quality mission: to strive to obtain the highest level of customer satisfaction, and to ensure continuous improvement in their operations. Construction Equipment Business Serves Oil Sand Project Needs O il sands are classified as an unconventional petroleum deposit, and are loose sand or partially consolidated sandstone containing naturally occurring mixtures of sand, clay and water, but saturated with a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum called bitumen. Natural bitumen deposits are reported in many countries, but in particular are found in extremely large quantities in Canada. Our subsidiary SMS Equipment supplies mining equipment, such as large drills, large shovels and large haul-trucks large bull-dozers, motor-graders, and wheel loaders, to oil sand producers and to mining contractors as well. These large machines are used for production and for site-development or site-maintenance. SMS Equipment also supplies parts and provides the other solutions which keep those machines running.
