TUBULAR– BRINGING GLOBAL EXPERTISE AND T he Oil and Gas Industry, both in North America and globally, relies on the supply of quality tubular products to develop and market hydrocarbons. Beginning as a traditional “Sogo Shosha” integrated trading company, Sumitomo Corporation in the Americas enjoyed success representing high quality Japanese manufacturers in the distribution of their tubular products supporting the oil and gas industry. Governmental trade regulations as well as customers’ heightened service expectations in the North American market led Sumitomo Corporation to shift its business model from only importing Japanese products to direct investments in local tubular distribution and service businesses. Through this network of distribution companies, Sumitomo Corporation was able to develop strong relationships with domestic manufacturers ultimately leading to equity investment in Vallourec Star. Today, Sumitomo Corporation, through its trade and distribution business, is an industry leader in the supply of tubular and associated products to the energy sector both within the domestic U.S. and globally. Sumitomo Corporation is a major supplier of products utilized in the finding and producing of hydrocarbons. We are North America’s largest supplier of oil country tubular goods (OCTG), the tubular products used in the well construction operation to produce the hydrocarbons. Our North American presence is primarily through our subsidiary OCTG distribution companies Premier Pipe, Pipeco Services and others (the OCTG companies story on page 8), Summit Tubulars in Canada, and Tubular Solutions Alaska. These distribution companies stock and supply OCTG on a “just in time” basis to support oil and gas companies in the drilling and completion of their wells. Sumitomo distribution companies have forged long term alliances with customers and domestic and foreign manufacturers to insure the operator’s ability to meet their well construction requirements. Additionally, we continue to import high quality material to service this market from various sources globally. Through our OCTG presence and through our subsidiary company, HOWCO, we are now a major supplier of raw steel material, semi-finished and finished products to major oil and gas service companies supporting well construction and completion.
