Machinery, Power & IT Group The Power of Wind Meets The Power of Business The WINDPOWER 2009 Conference Helps Expand SCOA’s Visibility in the International Wind Power Market O n May 4-7, 2009, The WINDPOWER 2009 Conference and Exhibition became the center of the wind power business universe. Over 1,280 exhibiting companies, representing all 50 states and 70 countries, along with over 23,000 attendees, networked and discussed their place in the international wind power business. The conference at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Ill. enjoyed a marked increase in attendance of 10,000 people over last year, and Sumitomo Corporation of America took its place as a wind power business exhibitor for the first time to expand its network to potential wind power customers. Hideyuki “Hugh” Ninomiya, Director of Transportation Systems & Equipment, said that SCOA’s main responsibility at this conference was officially presenting the company to the wind power industry. “SCOA has been active in the wind turbine market since 2003, before the industry boomed,” Ninomiya said, “Since we have a supply chain of forging and casting products for wind power, we thought it would be a good opportunity for us to show the ability and presence of SCOA and our manufacturing partners. “Wind power business is very important for our business,” he continued. “We are currently a major source of wind turbine shafts for major original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the U.S. and Europe. We intend to support the needs of OEMs here in the U.S. and the sub-tiers that are establishing business in the U.S. to help this business grow overall. Our position is that the growth of wind power in the U.S. is very beneficial for SCOA.” The international partners that SCOA spotlighted in its exhibit were Hyunjin Materials Co., Ltd. of South Korea, Samhyun Engineering Co., of South Korea, Kimura Chuzosho Co., Ltd. of Japan, and Yonghyun Base Materials Co., Ltd. of South Korea. Each of these manufacturers either is or has the capability to become a major supplier in the wind power market due to the components it manufactures: Hyunjin creates fully machined and painted main shaft forgings, Samhyun makes slew bearings,Yonghyun manufactures bear ring forgings and tower flanges, and Kimura provides bed plates, hubs, and gearbox casing castings. “SCOA is the main contractor and/or representative for these companies,” Ninomiya said, “We helped Hyunjin and Yonghyun enter the U.S. market, as we seek to do the same for Samhyun and Kimura. One of our goals is to be ‘Asia’s One Stop Shop’, supplying a kit of major forging and casting products for the nacelle of the wind turbine for the OEM to assemble.
