MACHINERY AND POWER BUSINESS GROUP SCOA Brings New DMU Rail Systems to California and Canada With Partner Nippon Sharyo, SCOA’s Transportation Department Completes Deals in Sonoma Valley and Toronto T he future of transportation is now, and SCOA is leading that charge with the introduction of diesel multiple unit (DMU) train projects in both the U.S. and Canada. SCOA’s Transportation Unit recently entered into two major supply contracts involving its car building partner Nippon Sharyo: one with California’s Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) to supply 18 DMUs to their rail system, which helped facilitate another contract for the Metrolinx project in Toronto, Canada, to supply 12 DMUs as well. A diesel multiple unit is a multiple unit train consisting of multiple carriages powered by one or more on-board diesel engines. A train composed of DMU cars can easily increase passenger capacity, and has the adaptability to change fuels with mechanical adjustments, from diesel to bio-diesel for example. Another benefit is that these trains can be split and joined enroute. It is not necessary to match the power available to the size and weight of the train – each unit is capable of moving itself, so as units are added, the power available to move the train increases by the necessary amount. Distribution of the propulsion among the cars also results in a system that is less vulnerable to single-point-of-failure outages. Because of the self contained nature of diesel engines, there is no need to run overhead electric lines or electrified track either, and that means lower system construction costs. SCOA, in conjunction with its car builder partner Nippon Sharyo, was also awarded a contract late in 2010 from Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) to supply 18 8 v i s i o n s S u m m e r 2 0 1 1 DMUs. The contract price is about $57 million for 18 DMUs and includes options for SMART and its partner agencies to purchase up to 146 cars. The delivery of 18 DMUs is scheduled from the end of 2013 through the middle of 2014; the new 18 DMUs will be used for a newly prepared commuter rail line both in Sonoma and Marin Counties, and more DMUs may be purchased as option by SMART and/or other transit agencies. Antoniello attended the pivotal meeting where the SMART board of directors gave their unanimous vote to award this contract to the Sumitomo-led team. “We are extremely pleased with this strong vote of confidence from the members of the SMART board,” Antoniello indicated. “We know the length of time and tremendous scrutiny and rigorous analysis that went into determining what the best system would be for SMART, so to receive a unanimous vote from the board should not be taken lightly.
