The View From Washington Change? Has Change Really Come To Washington? W ith Barack Obama’s decisive electoral victory over John McCain in the November Presidential election (365 electoral votes to 173 electoral votes) and expanded Democratic majorities in both the House (255 Democrats to 178 Republicans) and Senate (58 Democrats to 41 Republicans)*, political observers are questioning whether “change” has finally come to Washington. Although Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-CA) successful ouster of 82-year-old Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee could certainly be viewed as political change and a major victory for the liberal wing of the Democratic Obama Administration Rahm Emanuel John Podesta Hillary Clinton Larry Summers Eric Holder Susan Rice Robert Gates Gen. James Jones Chief of Staff Presidential Transition Director Secretary of State Director, National Economic Council Attorney General UN Ambassador Defense Secretary National Security Advisor Party, a number of prominent progressives have begun to voice increasing concern over some of President Obama’s cabinet choices and proposed policy positions. Consider that while a then Sen. Obama campaigned on the theme of “change,” and the need to rethink both America’s global and domestic social contracts, President Obama seems to have already back-tracked on his campaign calls to repeal tax cuts for the wealthy, tax the windfall profits of oil companies, quickly drawdown U.S. forces in Iraq, and renegotiate the U.S.’s free trade agreements, including NAFTA.
