with a double mesh of galvanized steel pipes, the connections are aluminum nodes, and the dome is completely bolted.The selected siding is composed of steel plate that is 0.6 millimeters thick, and re-covered with zinc-aluminum and epoxy paint.This re-cover extends the life of the structure to 50 years with minimum maintenance.” Twenty-one months of construction resulted in a half-sphere structure whose gigantic size was dictated by the space requirements needed to contain the mining operation, according to Diez de Medina.
During an inauguration ceremony held for invited guests and media, Governor of Potosi Felix Gonzalez commented to MSC that the investment in this project is a shining example of corporate commitment to the environment. Construction of the dome at the site, which is 4,000 meters above sea level, was initiated by MSC as a measure to keep the resulting dust from being dispersed by strong winds.
