MACHINERY AND POWER BUSINESS GROUP SCOA Partners with Nissan to Charge Electric Cars on American Roads and Explore Their Battery Reuse Potential New “Quick Charge” Stations On The Way, Battery Longevity Could Lead To New Aftermarket Opportunities T he electric car, once just a space-age dream, has now emerged as a viable and profitable green endeavor internationally, with electric car business gaining ground across the world. Nissan reported global sales of 21,000 units of its all-electric LEAF since its introduction last year. This makes Nissan Leaf the world’s best-selling electric car. Finding somewhere on the road to recharge an electric car, however, has always been a concern of its drivers. Sumitomo Corporation of America has been enlisted by Nissan to help shepherd an innovative, low-cost DC “quick charger” for electric cars into the U.S. market. This charger is being launched as part of a global collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation (SC), with the first installations planned for early 2012. Nissan and SCOA also announced that they are looking to Nissan North America’s (NNA) preferred home charging station partner, AeroVironment, to be their wholesale and retail distributor, as well as the preferred provider for U.S. installation services. In addition, Nissan and SC are currently partnering to explore the aftermarket potential of these electric car batteries. Michael Moyer, Product Manager for the Automotive Unit of SCOA’s Machinery and Power Group, said that Nissan Japan requested Sumitomo come on board to support the low cost chargers as part of the overall push to increase the sale of the Nissan LEAF. “Starting this year, Nissan will manufacture DC quick chargers that are one-half to one-third of the current charger cost,” Moyer explained.“Nissan LEAF will average 100 miles per charge, but currently there are not enough electric car charging stations in public — unlike convenient gas stations — so ‘range anxiety’ is a serious issue slowing the market expansion of electric vehicles. Low cost charges should help reduce this obstacle. Marketing of the quick chargers will be a joint effort by SCOA and Nissan North America, and we are expecting to sell 10,000 chargers within just a few years.” “There are three levels of charging units available for electric cars,” explained Moyer. “Level One is a simple inexpensive system that is installed in your garage to charge the car overnight. Level Two can charge a vehicle in 3-4 hours. 6 v i s i o n s W i n t e r 2 0 1 2 The Nissan LEAF (pictured right) and Nissan DC Quick Charger. Level Three, or DC Quick Charger, can charge a car battery to 80 per cent under 30 minutes.” With a starting price of $9,900, a third of the cost of models available on the global market today, the charger will come in two different models: a version for indoor use such as a garage, designed to help accommodate fleets such as daily rental cars; and an outdoor model charger, which is specifically designed for public and commercial charging uses – such as public spaces, corporate campuses, and retail centers. Nissan and SCOA currently are taking pre-orders for the chargers, with an online ordering system to be launched this year. “This charger is the first of its kind, and it’s truly revolutionary,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing, NNA. “A low-cost DC quick charger unlocks the potential for unprecedented electric vehicle use and adoption. Thousands of these chargers will be installed across the country, enabling electric cars like the Nissan LEAF to be driven for even greater distances and durations.” To further explore the “afterlife” potential of the electric car battery, Sumitomo and Nissan have formed a joint venture called 4R Energy, according to Moyer, with the hope of exploring new applications to take advantage of this battery’s impressively long shelf-life. “After six years of vehicle usage, the electric vehicle battery
