And for good reason. Looking across the dark blue waters of the Pacific Ocean from the Marin Headlands, you see first the orange towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, then a sparkling metropolis, its pyramid-shaped Transamerica building giving San Francisco a mythical quality straight out of The Wizard of Oz. Even the famous fog that regularly suffuses the city with a cooling glow is part of San Francisco’s charm. Across the bay, Oakland and the university community of Berkeley have their own attractions— neighborhoods rich with boutiques, coffee shops, art galleries, and ethnic restaurants. To the north, between Napa and Calistoga, are some of California’s most famous wineries (Robert Mondavi, Beaulieu, and Stags’ Leap, to name but a few), more than 280 altogether. At the opposite end of the region is techie Silicon Valley, home of Hewlett-Packard, Apple, and Google as well as museums, shopping centers, and curiosities like the Winchester Mystery House. Farther south is laid-back Santa Cruz, famed for its boardwalk roller coaster, big waves, beaches, and unique university mascot—the mighty, bright yellow banana slug.
